Digital modes on a R-390A Collins receiver

Always I wanted to use my Collins R-390A to receive Digital modes BPSK31 and RTTY mainly. I tried to use the sound line out but noise was so high that only a few messages could be received. R-390A is a old but sensitive and powerful receiver, designed by Collins Radio Company was mainly used by US Army, Navy and other agencies like CIA. It was a Top Secret equipment during a lot of years. It’s a triple conversion Superheterodyne, 26 Tubes, several bandwidths 16 kHz,8 kHz,4 kHz, 2kHz, 1 kHz, 0.1 kHz. Digital dial in 1954! (of course a mechanical system). R-390A was used like a RTTY received with a high stability frequency, it has a IF output interesting for receiver digital modes like BPSK31, RTTY, SSTV or DRM. This video is a description of DIY circuit which uses a MC1496 IC like a product detector and a 455 kHz filter working like oscillator, in video you can see product detect circuit from MC1496 datasheet. Circuit detects IF output from Collins to AF signal to computer. Its a interesting mix of old and new technologies!. Here you can see a Collins receiving BPSK31, BPSK63, BPSK125, RTTY using Digital Master 780 and MMTTY. I hope that you enjoy with this video!

I had a TV and other electronics hooked up to a generator at a home show, and when I plugged in the surge protector white smoke POURED out of the top and bottom of the TV. Smoke also came out of the bottom of my Blu-Ray player. Neither work now, nor does my sub woofer and HK audio video receiver. What would cause that? Too much power? Too little power? PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS.

I know that there are many factors that determine the difficulty, but in general how difficult is this? I am looking into a Lorex system with four wireless cameras, but the hardwired systems are cheaper and probably have much better pictures. All of the cameras will be placed outdoors, in the weather.
